Frequently asked questions

A youth exchange organized by United Vision under the Erasmus+ program is an EU-supported international meeting where groups of young people from different countries come together to engage in a shared learning experience. These exchanges are designed for young people aged 13–30 and are planned and carried out by the participants themselves, with support from youth workers. Through youth exchanges, participants can develop language and cultural skills, share experiences, and engage in fun and educational activities that foster creativity and teamwork.

The size of a youth exchange group typically ranges from 8 to 30 participants. This ensures an engaging and manageable group dynamic, allowing everyone to actively participate in all phases of the exchange.

Youth exchanges are structured to occur mainly during the participants’ free time, such as school holidays. The exchange includes several phases: planning, preparation, implementation, and follow-up. During the exchange, groups from at least two different countries come together to explore a common topic of interest through an informal learning program. These topics are often central to European youth work and are chosen by the participants themselves. The actual exchange typically lasts about a week, during which participants stay in a European country, followed by a reciprocal visit where young people from the host country visit Finland.

Youth exchanges can take place in any of the countries participating in the Erasmus+ program, including EU Member States and associated countries such as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Turkey.

You can join the youth exchange on your own, with a friend, or as part of a larger group. The exchange is a fantastic opportunity to make new friends from different countries and cultures, with the potential to form lifelong friendships.

Participation in the youth exchange is free of charge. The European Union funds Erasmus+ youth projects, covering travel, accommodation, meals, and program costs. You will only need to bring personal spending money for any additional purchases during the trip.

You will be guided and supported by experienced youth workers throughout all phases of the exchange. They will assist with planning, ensure a safe and respectful environment, and help you navigate any challenges that arise. Basic teamwork skills are essential, but our team is here to support you every step of the way.

By participating, you are committing to actively engage in the planning, preparation, implementation, and follow-up phases of the exchange. This involves working closely with your group and maintaining an open, cooperative attitude. Our youth workers will ensure that all activities are inclusive, safe, and non-discriminatory.

You will need a valid passport and any necessary vaccinations. If you need assistance obtaining a passport, we can help. Additionally, you must have your guardian’s permission to participate if you are underage. Bring an open mind, as well, to fully embrace the experience.

No specific language skills are required to participate in the youth exchange. While English is often used as a common language, the emphasis is on communication rather than fluency. Gestures, creativity, and a positive attitude are often enough to bridge any language gaps.

Accommodation arrangements will be made in consultation with participants and our partner organizations. Options may include recreation camps, hostels, schools, or other suitable group accommodations that are safe and provide basic hygiene facilities.

Pre-departure training is an essential part of the preparation process. It involves familiarizing participants with the culture, laws, safety protocols, and customs of the destination country. We will also review travel practices to ensure that everyone is well-prepared. Before each trip, we organize a joint meeting for participants and their guardians to address any questions or concerns.

The trip will include a variety of informal learning activities, such as workshops, discussions, role-playing, simulations, and cultural experiences. These activities are planned collaboratively by the participating groups and are designed to be engaging, educational, and enjoyable.

After the exchange, participants from the partner country will visit Finland, where we will host them and introduce them to Finnish culture. Following this, we will evaluate the exchange’s success and share our experiences with a broader audience through social media, our website, or local events.

Youthpass is a European certificate that recognizes your participation and learning during the youth exchange. It can be a valuable document for your future educational and professional opportunities, highlighting the skills and knowledge you gained during the exchange.

As a participant in the youth exchange, you will be covered by travel insurance provided by the organizing body, which typically includes coverage for illness during the exchange. However, please note that luggage insurance is often not included, so you may want to arrange this separately to ensure your belongings are protected.
